A daily prompt-based art challenge for the month of October, created and run by Siobhan G. Armstrong

In September of 2020, I realized that a lot of people in the artistic community were unhappy with the way a popular drawing challenge was being run. After hearing several people saying they wanted an alternative, I created the Alternatober art challenge.

Instead of focusing on a specific medium, like ink, it encouraged all creative people to share their creations. Instead of one prompt, the participants could choose between two alternatives.

The project was a success, bringing together painters, photographers, writers, glass workers, sculptors, and more into a community. Prompts were delivered daily via social media, but could also be downloaded as a list or a calendar. Weekly check-ins were sent out with an email list, and a few ads were run to get the word out to people beyond my immediate bubble.
